What is Habitat for Humanity?
The Aroostook Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

Our mission is to build simple, decent homes and to create safe neighborhoods in partnership with God's people in need. Habitat forms partnerships with local churches, large and small businesses, civic groups, individuals, and even other non profit organizations who are also dedicated to helping people in need.

The ability to find safe, affordable housing has become a nationwide dilemma. The local Habitat affiliate was established by concerned citizens who wanted to provide an opportunity for Aroostook County families in need to become homeowners. Through the efforts of our volunteer labor force, community supporters, and the homeowners, Habitat reclaims decaying, poverty-stricken areas and turns them back into responsible neighborhoods...one house at a time.

Who does Habitat for Humanity serve?
Habitat for Humanity serves those who are in need of safe, affordable, adequate shelter and have the ability to pay the morgage over the 20 year life of the loan. Homeowners, volunteers, donors and staff work in partnership to build a house. So the applicants must be willingness to partner with Habitat and work on the homes Habitat is building

House payments range from approximately $300 to $400 per month depending on the size of house. The average cost of a Habitat of Humanity house is approximately $50,000. Applicants must not be able to qualify for any government assistance that can be applied toward their housing needs.

How is Habitat for Humanity Funded?
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) family. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments enter a revolving Fund for Humanity to build more houses. Habitat carries out its mission at the community level through independent, locally run groups called affiliates.

Affiliates around the world raise the funds used to construct houses. Donations to a local Habitat affiliate are used as designated by the donor. Gifts received by HFHI that are designated to a specific affiliate or building project are forwarded to that affiliate or project. Undesignated gifts are used where most needed and for administrative expenses. HFHI's most recent audited financial statement is available upon request.

Habitat does not accept government funds for the construction of new houses or for the renovation or repair of existing houses. Habitat does accept government funds for the acquisition of land or houses in need of rehabilitation. Habitat also accepts government funds for streets, utilities and administrative expenses, so long as the funds have no conditions that would violate Habitat's principles or limit its ability to proclaim its Christian witness.

All Habitat affiliates are asked to tithe -- to give 10 percent of their contributions to fund house-building work in other nations.
